Shopping Affordably and Sustainably in College

By Sarah Rodden

The college experience is a fun and pivotal time to try new things, make lifelong friends and learn the power of independence. Along with newfound independence comes many lessons, such as budgeting and making worthwhile purchases. One of my biggest challenges in college has been finding affordable and sustainable options. Over the past four years, I’ve found some of my favorite companies that provide worthwhile and high-quality necessities.

Public Goods

The ultimate one-stop shop for all your grocery, body care, household, and health supplemental needs. Public Goods provides an affordable option delivered directly to your doorstep. Not only does Public Goods hold an emphasis on high quality and cheap products, but they also ensure that their company does not impact the planet negatively. For every new member, a tree is planted. Public Goods also steers away from using tree-made products and implements bamboo and sugarcane instead. All Public Goods’ products come in minimalistic and aesthetic packing, so it is high quality and adds a cute element to your household décor. Public Goods also offers a student discount of 20% off your first order, and it doesn’t get much better than this!

Etsy

I’ve always struggled to find high-quality statement pieces that last. The cheap gold rings I’ve purchased from Amazon tarnish so quickly it feels like I’m pouring my money down the drain. So instead, I started buying my statement pieces from Etsy and quickly fell in love. With a wide variety of styles, from boho chic to spoon rings, Etsy has options for everyone. Not only is there a variety of styles, but Etsy also allows customers to support small businesses and make unique purchases. Etsy also provides fast service and a user-friendly site.

Parade

Looking for a new underwear alternative? Parade is the place to look. With an emphasis on comfort and sustainability, Parade is the perfect place to look for new underwear staples. Parade epitomizes inclusivity by providing customers with a range of cute styles and sizes. In addition, with a 5/$40 monthly subscription, Parade makes purchasing new options an affordable reality. Parade has also recently debuted a new program, Second Life, which allows individuals to send in old underwear to be recycled! This new initiative matches their sustainable efforts and provides a way for individuals to sustainably dispose of used products.

Depop

The definition of repurposing, Depop is the perfect place for used items to find a new home. If you’re looking for basic staples or fun new additions to add to your closet, Depop is the place to go. From Y2K fashion to cowboy boots, Depop has something for everyone. With cheap and negotiable prices, it’s a necessity for any college woman looking to spice up her closet!

Saturday Market

Lastly, the best alternative is always to shop local whenever possible. Supporting small businesses by attending the Saturday Market in Eugene is a fun way to feel more connected to the community and get exposed to fun and unique artwork, healthy and local produce, and try fresh berry pies. The Saturday market provides a wholesome Saturday activity and the assurance that your money is being well spent.
