The MC’s describe one of the model’s self-care routines as she struts down the runway wearing sweatpants and a tank top. The crowd’s energy is unmatched as the model smiles and blows them a kiss. The confidence radiating off the models combined with the crowd’s unwavering support tells me this is more than just a fashion show. This is a community that celebrates body positivity, diversity, and self-expression.
“I think it’s important to represent every type of woman,” says model Francessca Orosco. The fashion show showcased three different looks that each of the models chose themselves. The only requirement was each look had to reflect the themes: self care, icons, and body positivity. Models and audience members alike both described the show as “empowering,” “inclusive,” and “showcases everyone’s different styles.”
The fashion show was a chance for the models to step out of their comfort zone in a supportive environment. Model Lauren Ho says her favorite look tonight was the icon, “I wore a beret and a long skirt, and I never thought I looked good in those things, but it was okay.”
The show was put on by The Women of Color Coalition. WOCC is a club at the University of Oregon that provides a space for women of color on campus and puts on a variety of events throughout the year. One of the students that helped put together the show, Esmerelda, says she’s very thankful for the presence of WOCC on campus, “For other students who feel isolated, especially people of color, they can know that there’s a space for them to express their true potential.” The importance of this event was felt by everyone involved. Model Maria Rodriguez adds, “there’s not a lot of diversity on this campus and it’s important to bring out the diversity we do have here.”
