How to Create a Capsule Wardrobe

By: Michaela Hagel

If you hate the stress of picking out an outfit every morning, then I have the solution for you! Capsule wardrobe. Many celebrities and high-paid individuals are known for--and swear by--their capsule wardrobes (think Steve Jobs’ turtleneck). Today, I will be sharing the pieces you need for a perfect capsule wardrobe.

First, what exactly is a capsule wardrobe? It is a collection of basics that can be mixed and matched to create endless outfit options. Highly popular while traveling, they can also be implemented into your daily life to create a low-stress environment when picking out outfits.

Let us start at the bottom and work up. First, bottoms!

Jeans:

Three pairs of jeans is an excellent place to start (one light wash, one medium and one dark). With a pair in each wash, you will always have options, but not so many that it is overwhelming. Jeans are incredibly easy to work into your wardrobe and can be styled in millions of different ways. Plus, jeans will never go out of style and they last forever!

Pants:

Get yourself a couple of pairs of pinstripe pants and you are set! These pants go with everything and can be dressed up for work, the bar, or even class. So, if you aren’t feeling jeans one day, pinstripe pants are the perfect alternative.

Skirts:

Depending on your style, you may want to add skirts to your capsule wardrobe. Pick one up in each of the colors that match your wardrobe best. For most people, a black, a white and a neutral plaid is a good start.

Remember that a capsule wardrobe is there to make your life easier, so feel free to compare this guide to your personal style and go from there. Next up, shirts and dresses.

Shirts:

Basics are essential here! Purchase solid-color tanks, tees and long sleeves in basic colors(black, white and nude/brown are suitable for most people). This combination of tops will allow for the least complicated layering. Mix in a couple of fun statement tops and sweaters, and you are good to go!

Dresses:

Like skirts, dresses are up to you. As dresses are basically their own outfit, try to branch out for more fun pieces. Having a stylish going-out dress (think LBD), a work dress and a brunch dress is a great goal to shoot for.

Although I have been saying black, white and tan/brown are good colors to buy for your basics, include different colors if they work with your style. Capsule wardrobes are meant to be customizable.

Lastly, and arguably the most important category, jackets.

Jackets:

One jacket has the ability to make or break your outfit. In order to have the most possibilities with the least amount of jackets, I recommend buying three jackets; one white, one black, and one brown/reddish. The style of them is up to you; pick something that goes with your personal style!

I wish you all good luck with creating your capsule wardrobes!
