Stress is in full swing this winter, especially for college students. Creating and maintaining healthy habits leads to a healthier lifestyle mentally and physically. Although you have other obligations throughout the day, it is important to incorporate things you enjoy doing and set at least an hour for them during your day. As a third-year college student, I have figured out what works best for me when I feel overwhelmed and need a motivational boost.
1. Physical activity: Staying active boosts your feel-good endorphins and distracts you from daily worries. Being active looks different for everyone: it can consist of going to the gym, stretching, doing yoga, or even walking to class! Any form of movement can
instantly make you feel better. It can be challenging doing activities when it is gloomy or raining out, but use it as an opportunity to try something new!
2. Maintaining a healthy diet: Eating more healthy and nourishing meals helps reduce stress and boosts your mood. A good tip is to look into Hello Fresh recipes or even dive into the Trader Joe’s frozen food section to find foods that are always comforting!
3. Journaling: Stop mindlessly scrolling on Instagram for hours on end. Instead, try things like journaling, coloring or drawing! These hobbies are great opportunities to reduce stress and a creative way of expressing your feelings.
4. Boost your serotonin: Spend time with people who make you laugh! This will give you an instant serotonin booster and a good study break!
5. A good night’s sleep: Getting your full eight hours of sleep every night will not only help you feel well-rested the next day, but it also counteracts your mental health, your thinking process, and your overall body.
Winter is always a stressful and challenging time of the year, but you will get through this! Makesure to write about all the positive aspects of life, and remember that warm weather and spring break are just around the corner!
