As we transitioned into fall this year, one TikTok trend drew attention to the coziness and contentment of 90s romantic comedies. Dubbed “Meg Ryan Fall,” this trend explores everything from transitional outfits with menswear influence to autumnal book recommendations and Spotify playlists. Her roles in When Harry Met Sally, You’ve Got Mail, and Sleepless in Seattle have primarily inspired this trend, with their neutral outfits and East Coast setting. It is clear that Nora Ephron, who pioneered the era of comforting rom-coms, has perfected this genre to a tee.
If you are looking for more to watch, other movies that are perfect for a rainy Eugene day are Dead Poets Society, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Mystic Pizza, Good Will Hunting, and the series Gilmore Girls.

In regards to music, Evermore by Taylor Swift or the entire Caamp radio on Spotify have been my go-to this season. For the perfectly curated playlist of moody comfort songs, TikTok’s @sincerelymolly has published her Meg Ryan inspired playlist, linked here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0hXsiWKRDJNQDHtatBhRyf?si=ab27bc4459f34884
Eugene, Oregon is such a magical town to spend fall in and the perfect place to ring in “Meg Ryan Fall.” If you’re looking for some festive activities, it is never too late in the season to visit a pumpkin patch with friends, carve a pumpkin or two, shoot some film of the vibrant maple trees, or try out all of the Trader Joe’s pumpkin-themed treats. Getting homework done at coffee shops like Vero Espresso, Sanctum Cafe, or Farmer’s Union is always a good idea, too. This year, I tried out a recipe for pumpkin chocolate chip cookies with my roommates that was amazing and surprisingly easy. With just a can of pumpkin puree, you can make so many great harvest recipes.
As corny as they might be, nostalgic trends like “Meg Ryan Fall” are a light-hearted way to get inspired and appreciate the red-and-gold magic of the outdoors this time of year. All you need is a classic 90s rom-com, a cozy blanket and a hot drink, and you’re all set for the perfect fall afternoon.
