The transition to quarantine was rough. In a matter of days, the hustle between various classes was replaced by the simple click of a Zoom link. The narrative of using quarantine as a time to “grow” popularized quickly, and what some might describe as the “Chloe Ting phenomenon” began. At-home workouts became all the rage as people awaited the reopening of gyms. However, what was supposed to be an extended Spring Break turned into an online term, and an online term became an online school year. For many of us, the sudden shift in routine produced exhaustion, mental strife and a sense of uncertainty. Quarantine was never meant to be a “staycation” where we suddenly emerge with rock-hard abs and the ability to make perfect banana bread; this is an unpredictable time meant to protect us from an unprecedented pandemic. So if you’re struggling with body positivity during quarantine like me, here’s a few things I’ve learned:
Forgive yourself
Weight gain, weight loss, stress acne and a lack of vitamin D are the natural result of a year-long quarantine. It’s important to remember that our bodies aren’t made to be inside for long periods of time. Before COVID, we were constantly moving to different destinations, building muscle and keeping our physique strong. Our bodies are in unfamiliar territory, and we need to forgive them for it.
Don’t compare yourself to others
Every body is different. It may sound cliché, but each body is literally biologically unique. That girl with the snatched waist and clear skin on instagram may indeed have worked hard to be her “best self.” However, she’s supported by an entirely different genetic background. So—if you need to—take a break from social media or mute accounts that hurt your body image. Remind yourself that beauty standards were created by men to keep queens from realizing their own potential.
Don’t sh*t on yourself!
Oftentimes, we can be our biggest bully. When we’re talking to friends—or even to ourselves—we name-call and shame our bodies. I know it seems like this eases the pain, but can you imagine if someone followed you around 24/7, spewing insults about your worst insecurities? You wouldn’t stand for it! Be kind to yourself because you deserve it. If it’s hard to push away those negative thoughts, attach sticky notes with compliments to your mirror.
Don’t get frustrated
It’s impossible to create an entirely new body image for yourself in a day. Some days will be good and some will be awful. Loving yourself is a constant battle, especially in an age where there’s always a mirror ten feet away. On those bad days, feed your body with sunlight, kindness and complements. Remind yourself how hard your body is working to support you, and remember that all things thrive in love.
So when the time comes again to rejoin society, most of us won’t have the body we want. Yet, you should be proud of your quarantine scars. Your body worked so hard to overcome this difficult time, and here you are—alive and healthy. I am so proud of you. So, flex your quarantine bod like the medal of honor it is.
